2023 GMC Canyon: a worthy successor
August 16 2022,
In 2015, when GMC brought the Canyon back to its menu, critics were unanimous; the company had just delivered its best mid-size pickup ever. Eight years later, here it is with the sequel, an even more accomplished version.
Truly, it's a worthy successor to the 2015 model. Here's what makes it so.
Versions for all tastes
GMC has announced four variants for its 2023 Canyon. First, the Elevation model stands out with its black appearance. Its equipment will be complete, but just like with the AT4 variant that follows in the lineup, some of its elements will be more basic, such as the size of the multimedia system's screen; 8 inches instead of 11 on the higher-end models.
Under the hood, this Elevation variant will feature a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, a block that offers 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. Note that with the cousin model, the Chevrolet Colorado, some variants of this engine offer less power. With the Canyon, you get the most powerful engine from the start.
And what can you tow with such a capacity? GMC announces it at 7700 pounds. An eight-speed automatic transmission will manage the power delivery to the wheels.
Note one thing about the body; only one configuration is on the menu, a crew cab and short box model.
AT4 and AT4X
Reference was made to the AT4 model, a version more capable of taking on off-road obstacles. With the new AT4X version, we are back with even more capabilities. This model, in fact, is the GMC version of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. Expect something incredible with a model that features a raised suspension, skid plates, locking differentials, Multimatic shocks, as well as 33-inch tires specifically designed to handle uninviting surfaces. The angle of attack with this version that features a redesigned front end is 36.9 degrees.
And this AT4X variant, which will sit above the Denali variant in the lineup, will enjoy hyper-generous equipment that will include, among other things, a higher quality audio system, wireless access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps, a head-up display system, as well as a camera system offering 10 shots, including one from underneath the vehicle.
A driving mode called Baja will even be accessible, for those who enjoy high-speed off-road driving.
This is truly an extraordinary model that will arrive in the spring of 2023. Construction is scheduled to begin early next year. Of course, more details will follow as we get closer to the model's debut date.
