With Ford and Chevrolet having already shown us the electric version of their full-size pickup trucks, all reflectors were on GMC's side to see what the company had to offer. Of course, Chevrolet's cousin of the Silverado model wasn't going to go it alone and offer another technology, but still, we were anticipating what the truck division of General Motors (GM) was going to offer us.

We finally got our answer at the end of October with the official unveiling of the American version of the GMC Sierra EV. The 2024 model is expected in the U.S. first in a single configuration, while here in Canada, the Sierra EV will make its debut in 2025.

On the menu are a lot of interesting features. Let's take a look at five of them.

The structure

Let's start with the basics. The Sierra EV pickup truck will take advantage of GM's Ultium structure, which offers a world of possibility. The latter was designed to serve this type of model and it will be to its advantage. For example, strength and durability promise to be superior, according to GMC.

Then, because it offers an 800-volt architecture, it will allow for very fast charging times. For example, the company is talking about a time of 10 minutes to recover 160 kilometers of freedom on a fast terminal with a capacity of 350 kW.

At home, it will even be possible to send energy back to the grid, which means that the Sierra EV will be able to power your home in case of a power outage.

A built-in 19.2 kW charger is included with the model.

Range

When it designed its model, GMC had one number in mind for range: 400 miles. That translates to 640 kilometers, which is excellent. Most importantly, they promise that you won't lose more towing loads than with a gasoline model. If the latter consumes 25% more fuel during this type of exercise, the energy loss will be the same with the battery. That's reassuring.

Towing

Let's go with the capacities. GMC has announced a towing capacity of 9,500 pounds for towing loads, while it will be possible to place 1,300 pounds of equipment in the box (payload). Better yet, a special towing mode will be included to make things easier and more efficient.

As a bonus, we'll find a system that offers nearly 15 camera angles, so we can perform with confidence and safety.

Technology

Inside, the richness is there with a dashboard draped in noble materials and a very rich presentation. And when it comes to technology, you'll be well served with all the possible applications and wireless connections to them. All of this will take shape on a 16.8-inch multimedia screen, the largest in the history of GMC products. In front of the driver is a digital display unit that replaces the traditional instrument cluster. Its size: 11 inches. Then, a 14-inch screen will hold the information you want on the head-up display. It promises.

The bed

Finally, a word about the bed. The size of the bed is 5 feet 11 inches, but by lowering the partition between the bed and the cabin, the surface area that can accommodate equipment can be increased to 9 feet. Then, by opening the GMC multipurpose tailgate, you can increase it to 11 feet. That doesn't exist anywhere else in the segment.

Really, the GMC Sierra EV seems ready to take the market by storm with such a technical sheet. Let's just say we can't wait to see it show up here. Check back for more information about this one.
